B is for Bubblews (Technially, a Retraction)

BSadly, I thought of the theme for today’s post not because I’m still a staunch supporter of Bubblews, but because I’m now not so sure how I feel about the organization as a whole – if you can actually call it an organization.

Last year I wrote a post saying that Bubblews is not a scam. At the time, a lot of people were complaining that they were not getting paid. Most of these people had identifiable issues in their writing (not long enough, gaming the system somehow, and even a few Copyscape issues). None of the legitimate writers I knew at the time were having trouble getting paid.  [Read more...]

A is for Ambition

a to z badgeGood morning, everyone! I woke up in a bit of a panic because, of course, April sort of snuck up on me. I have big plans for April though – big ambitions.

I started this site as a place where I thought I would mentor other writers or aspiring writers, helping them learn how to actually make money online. I don’t want to teach people how to find survey sites or writing farms (though I have to be honest and acknowledge they exist). I want to show others that there are opportunities out there for those who really want to write; for those who have the drive to work hard. [Read more...]

Simply Sunday – 10/6/13

sunsetIt was another long week. I struggled a bit with fatigue, so there was one project I wish I had done a bit faster, but I got it done eventually. This coming week looks to be a bit rainy and I have a couple of obligations – a lunch and a trip to help my grandmom out, but both of those should be relatively short distractions.

So what did I get done this past week?

  • 8 hours on the timed finance project
  • 2 posts (700+ words) written for a finance project
  • Project guidelines and information to an outsourced worker for a project I do for a larger client; this involved some research and configuration, mostly for an email project
  • Only one post here on WFP, and I didn’t keep up with the FB page as well as I could have.
  • 3 posts for Bubblews [Read more...]

Simply Sunday – 9/29/13

Whew! I feel like I can hardly breathe. It’s barely 7:30pm on Sunday night and sunsetI’m exhausted. I have a lot to do, but most of what I really needed to do this past week is finished. I wrapped up a huge project and have another one to complete in the next few days, but things are solidifying. Sorry for my absence, as a result.

So here’s what I got done this past week:

  • I edited and published 34 guest posts for a SEO project.
  • I put 9.5 hours towards a timed project.
  • I put 1 hours towards a social media project and finally found someone new to outsource this task to. This is something I won’t have to do this coming week.
  • I wrote 25 articles (400-500 words) for one SEO project.
  • I wrote 11 posts for Bubblews. [Read more...]

Simply Sunday – 9/22/13

sunsetIn the wake of my technical woes, which weren’t as resolved as I’d hoped them to be, I’ve been sort of busy. Things are picking up again, but they’re still scattered and I’m not quite making as much as I need right now. I’m trying to stay as focused as possible, but there are only so many workable hours in the day. A girl has to sleep sometime, right?

So what did I do this week?

  • I edited and published 25 guest posts for a project.
  • I put 11 hours towards one timed project I do weekly.
  • I put 2.75 hours into a different timed social media project.
  • I did some research for a holiday-related writing project. [Read more...]

My Technical Woes

computerHaving a job where you can set your own hours and work from home can be incredibly freeing. You don’t have to report to the corporate man, you can set your hours, communicate with clients at your own schedule, and even get some personal tasks done. Life is good. You’re paying your bills. And then one morning you wake up to the unimaginable – the impossible.

The blue screen of death.

Yea. Totally not cool.

A few of you have technical skills when it comes to the inner workings of the computer. Most of us don’t.

I fall somewhere in the middle. I can do a system restore, disk cleanup, disk defragment, virus scan, and some other scans. I can add/remove files. I can even open my computer up to make sure the fans are clean. I have even replaced a hard drive or graphic card in my time. [Read more...]

Simply Sunday – 9/15/13

sunsetHoly cow. I can’t believe we’re already half way through September. This makes me feel a bit nervous, because I don’t feel recovered from July and August yet. I do have quite a bit of work lined up this week, and I’m looking for more, so I hope I’ll be back on track soon.

Sometimes, when you’re writing – or managing a project with other writers – what you do is dependent on other people. I had a lot of trouble with that this week. My client neglected to send me some reports I needed, so I lost hours on his project. A couple of my writers had trouble keeping to schedule this week, for their own reasons, so parts of the project they’re on got delayed as well. But, I’ll recover. [Read more...]

The Writing Sample Scam

copyrightThe day isn’t over yet. I still have a bit of work to do, but a storm is about to roll through so I thought I’d try to get today’s thoughts out before I end up shutting my computer down for a while.

Do you use job boards like Elance and oDesk to look for work? If so, you may have noticed a rather alarming trend. From time to time you will see a potential employer request a writing sample within the job description.

I’m not talking about regular writing samples here. I’m not talking about the links from your own portfolio. I’m talking about specific instructions to write an article on a specific subject, with specific keywords – an article that would fit the client’s project needs. [Read more...]

Time Management and Your Writing Career

deadlinesI wanted to touch base this evening . I’m trying to get back into a regular routine. Today, for me, was rough. I was feeling a bit down today, as happens to anyone from time to time. I was also watching the social media outlets and seeing hundreds of posts about 9/11/01 and my heart just welled up over and over again.

In an odd way, trying to get away from social media sites really helped me to stay productive today. I wasn’t checking and double checking, worried I’d miss something on a business page. I just focused on other things.

That got me thinking about time management.

Writers have a really bad reputation when it comes to deadlines. A lot of people think this is just an expected attribute, but it’s not – and it’s not OK. What it really boils down to is time management, or lack thereof.

There are only 24 hours in each day. No matter what happens, this is something you can’t change. It’s fact. It’s non-negotiable. Twenty four. That’s it. [Read more...]

Simply Sunday – 9/8/13

sunsetAnother week flew by. I had a few struggles, but it wasn’t all that bad, to be honest. I have a plan for this week, too, so I have high hopes.

So what did I do this past week?

  • I put 9 hours into the timed project I do for one client. I really wanted to get to 10+ but he is a little slow to respond with info I need from time to time. I’m looking at my tracking sheet and I kept up a great schedule until the end of the week (when he had internet trouble).
  • I sent one follow-up email to a client who had told me he’d be in touch. He had been sick. Now I’m wondering if that was an excuse to cover for his budget issues. [Read more...]
